Rare pair of Gothic Revival stools by Victor Aimone 1880
Product information:
A magnificent pair of 19th-century Gothic Revival stools masterfully hand-carved in oak by the celebrated Italian sculptor Victor Aimone, renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and recipient of the Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition. These stools stand as extraordinary examples of 19th-century European decorative arts within the tradition of Gothic Revival.
Each stool is crowned with four finely carved lion heads at the corners, symbolising power and guardianship, while the legs end in bold claw feet rendered with striking anatomical precision. The structural framework is further enriched by forward-facing dragons whose claws hold a central heraldic shield in highly detailed relief. This combination of mythical and heraldic imagery reflects Aimone’s highly imaginative and theatrical Gothic design language.
The centre of each seat features a mythological face with bat-like wings—an intricate Gothic motif that evokes mystery, fantasy, and medieval grandeur. Both stools are topped with their original woven green upholstery, which remains in remarkably good condition, finished with soft golden trim and a matching skirt that complements the warm oak patina and enhances the richness of the carved surfaces.
