17th century style Dutch marquetry Art cabinet

Sale price€32.000,00

Product information:
Exceptional 18th-century art cabinet conceived as a tribute to the opulence and refinement of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. Built on an oak base and veneered with exotic woods, representing one of the most luxurious and costly construction methods of its time.

The cabinet is fully decorated on all sides with highly intricate marquetry, featuring floral vases, birds, butterflies, and typical Dutch Golden Age naturalistic motifs. These are combined with refined geometric compositions and ornamental inlays, further enriched with delicate mother-of-pearl detailing that enhances depth and luminosity across the surface.

At its centre lies a remarkable interior “mirror chamber,” designed as an architectural fantasy with columns, spatial perspective, and illusionistic depth to create a sophisticated trompe l’oeil effect. This theatrical interior references 17th-century cabinets of curiosity, originally intended for the display of precious objects in an intimate and highly decorative setting. A cleverly concealed secret drawer is integrated behind a staircase within this interior composition, adding an additional layer of refinement and mystery.

The cabinet contains a total of twelve drawers, all constructed in oak using traditional dovetail joinery, demonstrating the exceptional level of craftsmanship and structural precision.

The piece stands on an elegant and powerful base with finely turned solid oak legs. Based on construction and wear, this base is likely of 17th-century origin, indicating that the cabinet incorporates earlier structural elements, while the upper section was refined or reworked in the 18th century in accordance with historicizing design traditions.

A rare and highly decorative work that embodies the fascination with Dutch Golden Age artistry, combining historical depth with an impressive visual and architectural presence. Over its long lifetime, the cabinet has undergone various restorations, including repairs to wood and marquetry. The hinges and lock have also been replaced at some point within the last century, reflecting its continuous use and preservation.
